Energetics and Spirituality in Fine Art Nude photography

As busy human beings, always working towards our goals and reaching for success, we generally have little awareness of our body's energy system and our energetic and spiritual health. It might have never occurred to us that when we see another person, either in life, in a photograph or an artwork, the areas that attract or disturb us the most are usually the areas where we ourselves need the most attention, love and acceptance in our body.


Due to our chronically stressful, predominantly sitting lifestyle, overwork, anxieties, worries, the energy channels of our bodies get blocked in areas which are related to specific emotional or energetic imbalances, manifesting as pains, discomforts, swelling, heat, inflexibility etc. The most common area of concern in all of us is the lower back which is related to the kidneys. The lack of rest, constant stress, fear and anxiety, overly exciting or worrying information, unnatural food and stimulating drinks, take their toll on the health of our kidneys resulting in the energy not being able to nourish our spine, joints, unable to cool our heart and head and circulate freely around the body.

Because of our energetic anatomy, in men this trapped energy, unable to rise up the spine, accumulates in the area of the stomach and sexual organs, creating increased sexual desire and congestions in the abdominal area. It creates restlessness and uncertainty in our future. It makes us into slaves of desires and overwork. As energy of the kidneys is unable to rise up the spine, it results in emotional insensitivity in men and overly excessive activity of the mind due to the heat in the head.

In women, thanks to the wonderful function of the womb, the energy is monthly purified in the abdominal and sexual area, however the congestion still occurs in the area of the hips and thighs and most importantly in the area of the heart. While the Yin energy of the kidneys is meant to cool the head and the heart, due to the blockage in the lower spine, and the direct connection between the womb and the heart, excessive energy rises to the heart and chest area which results in accumulation of excessive emotional heat, lumps or swelling in the breasts and breathing problems.

Overtime, due to the lack of natural movement, rest, spontaneity of our actions, attachments to daily routines and habits, more serious issues and imbalances develop in our energy flow and as a result in our physical health.

So what does photography have to do with it?

A mindfully executed photograph, just like acupuncture or a massage therapy, has the power to engage the trapped energy in our body by bringing our awareness to that area in the artwork and then by the skillful manipulation of the artist, which includes the use of dynamic lines, composition, shadows, light, color and various elements, this energy is subconsciously lead to open up energy channels and gates of our minds and bodies and unlocking of our energetic and spiritual potential. Various techniques may help us to redirect this energy, break the habitual pattern of it, disperse it or point out the area of suffering in the body that needs our undivided attention. As a rule, the images that address our energetic needs, resonate with us the most.

However, when used mindlessly, like for example in most conventional porn, the energy remains trapped in the sexual area which only results in even stronger buildup of blockages. When used unethically, sensual imagery can lead our trapped sexual energy towards the objects of desire, like it's often used in commercial marketing and advertisement, which is often seen as objectification of human bodies. However, when we are aware of this trick, we can easily take our focus away from the objects of desire and admire the photograph itself.

Some examples of unexpected therapeutic effect may include photographs revealing beautiful sexual area in the midsection and then leading the viewer's eyes up the spine towards the point behind the heart or shoulder blades, along the neck and further to the back of the head or to the face. Or leading the energy in the front of the body up the smooth and healthy stomach area towards the chest, the neck and the eyes. The energy can also be lead down from the genital area toward the tips of the feet along the beautiful smooth thighs and calves. Delicate, smooth, gliding lines and curves in the image will create a sort of energetic bridge to navigate the trapped energy in the congested areas of our body. Various accessories or ropes may help to emphasize area of focus in the image, create additional routes of energy flow or point out the areas of blockages and suffering in our body.

Red color is associated with the hot energy of heart desire and passion. Black - the energy of kidneys and sexual organs. White - the lungs and the breathing. White is also associated with human mentality and rationality. Calm blue and green are tranquil energies of smooth circulation, the flow of life and the spirit. Colors can be skillfully used to achieve strong therapeutic effects. Red color for example can warm the heart, while pink can open it to unconditional love. Black can nourish our essence, make us strong and calm. Blue and green can bring us closer to the nature and the soul, while purple can bring us awareness of the higher selves.

But, perhaps, most important of all is the overall feeling of the image, the facial expression, the eyes and the body language. Artistic nude photography combined with relaxed, pure expression and tranquil compassionate eyes can instantly relive our stress, bring our awareness back to our body, heart and soul, temporarily release the energetic blockages and heal our emotional wounds. Suffering, sad or pensive expression of the face and the body in a photograph can bring the awareness to our own suffering, our own lack of love and acceptance towards ourselves and our bodies. Deep, calm, meaningful eyes can lead our trapped sexual energy into the depths of our souls and shadow parts of ourselves.

There are infinite ways to use this amazing medium for our healing. This is a great pity when beautiful fine art nude imagery gets censored or judged for being immoral or vulgar. It is our wish to bring awareness of all artists and photographers to the amazing healing powers they have in their hands.
